This article discusses the importance of automotive engineering day and discusses how it has made the process of vehicle design and manufacture more efficient.

Automotive engineering is a branch of mechanical engineering which specializes in the manufacture of different types of vehicles. This field makes use of principles from other branches of engineering to automate the process of vehicle manufacture and make it a more efficient process.

Function Of Automotive Engineering

The main function of automotive engineering is to enable smooth production process and also ensure that all systems of the car coordinate with each other properly. Automotive engineers first go through the requirements given by the buyer. Then the design for each component is loaded into the computers and the automated production is set into process after issuing the right command to each production tool.

Areas Of Importance For Automotive Engineering

There are certain areas that automotive engineers are concerned about when it comes to the production of vehicles. These are:

a) Vehicle emissions: In this age when there is a lot of hue and cry about green house gas emissions from vehicles, it is of utmost importance that vehicles are made as emission free as possible. So all the vehicle components involved in fuel combustion are properly synchronized so as to provide good combustion.

b) Safety: Automobile engineers conduct a number of crash tests on the cars before releasing them into the market. The damage in each type is analyzed to see if the car can withstand the accidents that take place in normal driving conditions.

c) Automobile attributes: This considers a few features like handling, braking and normal driving and how the vehicle behaves during each of these. The entire structure of the vehicle is checked to see if there is any excess vibration in a certain area or if the noise produced can be reduced.

d) Vehicle Internals: The internal area of the vehicle is checked for customer comfort. The automobile should also have the ability to be user-friendly in times of unfriendly climatic or terrain conditions.

e) Performance: It should have good pickup and power and should also give good fuel efficiency.

In the early days, the manufacture of each automobile component and their assembling was done manually by workers. But now, a number of automated instruments are used to make this process simpler. For instance, cars are built in huge car plants which are run on assembly lines. They have the capacity to roll out even 50,000 vehicles a year.

Any error in the system can be detected from a central computer and can be corrected within no time. This is helped to decrease dependency on manpower and increase the production efficiency. This has also made vehicle safer and better than before.
